The only senior team with a fixture yesterday, the 3rd XV (Pirates) hosted newly formed Hook & Odiham on their first visit to Gosport Park in a Solent 4 Merit Table match which the home side won 26-7 writes Joe Cloke.

Having opted, unusually, to play on Pitch 1, the largest of the main pitches, the Pirates, while not lacking in enthusiasm, had a certain difficulty in catching the ball.

Eventually, however, Chris Brettell managed to field the ball and then leave most of the opposition and his own team behind and run two thirds of the length of the pitch to score under the posts, a try duly converted by Shaun Taylor.

The failure by two men of Gos to secure the ball on their own line gifted the visitors a try which was also converted to level the scores.

On the half hour Reece Walters scored a second try for Gos shortly before he departed for a 10 minute break in the sin-bin, leaving the Pirates to finish the first half 12-7 ahead.

The second half, while similar to the first, did see more sustained pressure from the home team forwards in particular.

Russell Weeks went over for the third try and shortly before the final whistle Ross Finlayson bulldozed his way over under the posts in inimitable fashion for a fourth. Both were converted by Shaun Taylor.
