Gosport & Fareham Under 14s (Saxons) faced a confident Havant in the bright autumn sunshine in front of a large vociferous crowd and won the cup tie 25-22 with a last minute penalty

With a good Wednesday night training behind them and a good pre match build up what could possibly go wrong?

It wasn't scripted but Saxons conceded a try within the first 90 seconds.

But the Saxons proved though that they are now made of sterner stuff and within minutes hit back with a try of their own from a well worked move off of the back of the scrum.

The game was then to swing back in favour of Havant with another score before yet another try for Saxons this time converted to take the lead for the first time in the match.

Despite Havant having the size and bulk in the forwards the Saxons had the upper hand in the scrums, pushing Havant back.

As the match developed it became feisty with some unnecessary off the ball aggression.

Strong control from the Referee was required and duly carried out ably assisted by his Assistant Referees.

Havant went back in front with a penalty try after a high tackle by the Saxons.

A further try by Havant put the visitors 10 points ahead with 15 minutes to go.

Some tactical substitutions and fresh legs were sent on and slowly but surely the Saxons clawed their way level with two more hard worked tries.

Havant threw everything they had at the Saxons but it was the Saxons who went closest to scoring with only some strong tackling by Havant preventing another Saxon try.

With time almost up and the Saxons pressing hard for a try, the referee awarded a penalty in front of the posts. The penalty kick was converted and the Saxons duly celebrated.

It was a fantastic cup tie in which the Saxons played superbly well against a bigger and at times intimidating team and opposition crowd.

To come back from behind three times in the match was a sign of how defiant the Saxons have become.
