Over the October half term, Gosport & Fareham Under 8s (the Sharks) have been walking from Land's End to John O'Groats!

OK, not all in one go...

Each player has been given a pedometer to count steps daily.

It is estimated they need to do 1,748,000 steps between them and by the end of day four they had nearly hit a million. By the start of the final day they had hit their target!

The idea and execution of this fundraiser came from one of their coaches, John Batten, who is Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Winchester University.

"We wanted to incorporate the RFU Core Values, so Teamwork and Enjoyment have been the emphasis - that and keeping them moving over the holiday! explained John.

"The children have been sharing photos along with their progress and all look to have really enjoyed it. We have had so many positive comments from the parents it seems they may have enjoyed this almost as much as the kids!

"We set a target of £500 to put towards kit and equipment, and we're so close to reaching that goal. The Just Giving page will be active for a couple of weeks yet so, if you would like to make a donation, it would be hugely appreciated. You can do so at goo.gl/houCcX

Twenty per cent of all money raised will go to a local charity chosen by the children. The coaches nominated three charities and let the children vote as to which they wanted to donate to. The charity the Sharks voted for is Aiden's Walking Appeal. For more information go to www.aidens-walking-appeal.org.uk

"As coaches and managers, we are so proud of what the team have achieved," said John.

"If you want to look back on what we've done, or follow our future endeavours (there will definitely be more!), please follow us at twitter.com/GFRFCSharks," he added.
